Richard Garriott Resigns from NCSoft

In this "Open Letter from General British",Richard Garriott ( Lord British in Ultima and General British in Tabula Rasa)announced that he would be stepping down from his position at NCSoft.

Fellow Soldiers of the AFS,

I am happy to finally be able to write the players and community of Tabula Rasa. We've been on quite a journey together. First in creating a game unlike any other on the MMO market, then growing a loyal community and finally launching the game and its players into space with Operation Immortality. It has been quite an unforgettable journey, one that I will treasure for the rest of my life.

I am very grateful to you loyal players for sticking around through what I think we can all honestly say was a rough launch. I thank the development team for pushing hard to get polish, updates and new content out every month since launch...a feat that I think is unusual in MMO development. They have a lot to be proud of.

Many of you probably wonder what my plans are, now that I have achieved the lifelong dream of going to space. Well, that unforgettable experience has sparked some new interests that I would like to devote my time and resources to. As such, I am leaving NCsoft to pursue those interests.

This news is difficult for me to deliver. I am honored to have worked with the team I've had and I'm grateful to the community who makes this game so unique and fun.

Tabula Rasa beta signups !

NCSoft and Destination Games are accepting beta registrations for their sci-fi MMOG Tabula Rasa. This is the new online game from Richard Garriott, a living legend known for his Ultima titles.

Sign up here !

You do need a PlayNC account, but there are no obligations there (you do need to fill in a multiple choice question form and specify your system specs). EU residents are welcome too for a change. Don't expect a downloadlink right away though, you will be handpicked based on the questionnaire you've filled in....

Tabula Rasa reborn. Game preview from E3 2005

We were given the opportunity to take another look at Tabula Rasa. Starr Long took some time to show us exactly what they have done to the game over the last year. The transformation is profound. The old TR was a very fantasy based MMORPG. The new TR is still an MMORPG. but it's changed into a tactical futuristic warfare game. This may sound odd at first but it's actually pretty cool.

Tabula Rasa may be the first MMORPG to grab people who are into first person shooters. Imagine Battlefield 1942 in a persistent world where you don't just destroy your enemies base you take control and then own it. Now imagine that it's this style except you are only one character by yourself or in a team.

The battles seen in the video of this presentation will show you that the game is totally different than it was last year. I personally think that the improvement is a huge one. You can make up your own mind though. Here's a link to a 12 minute video we shot of Starr Long showing us Tabula Rasa.

Previously I was disappointed with what I saw. Now I'm very excited and I think the game will be much more successful with the changes made....

The blank slate remade

Tabula Rasa is the game I am most excited to see at E3 this year. Last year we took a look at the game behind closed doors Here's our original article. We liked some of what we saw. We were also a bit disappointed. So I was very glad to hear when they decided to wipe the slate clean and work on it again. My hopes are that it will have some of the elements that I felt it was missing before. Here's a quote from their official site.

TABULA RASA is about to unveil a clean slate

Computer and Video Games.com reports today that Tabula Rasa, the new game from the creator of the legendary Ultima RPG series has undergone a substantial redesign and is about to be revealed again ahead of next month's E3.

Garriott himself stated on the official Tabulsa Rasa Website that : "Simply put, our team felt that the first incarnation of Tabula Rasa was not the game we felt it should be. We felt this way from our own reactions playing the game as well as others external to the team playing it."

Tabula Rasa delayed to 2006 or later?

Today NCsoft put out an official press release and financial statement for 2005. Most notably mentioning the release of Guild Wars on April 28,2005 and City of Villans (Expansion for City of Heroes ) later this year as well as Auto Assault . Tabula Rasa which was delayed in 2004 was not mentioned in the press release.

In an interview with PC Game News which was published on the originally proposed release date for Tabular Rasa of Nov 1,2004 Executive Producer Richard Garriott did tell us that the game would be at least pushed back a few more months past Winter 2005.

After the shakeup with the Tabula Rasa project this summer in which some of the designers, artists and producers walked out;a bit of delay was expected but no mention at all for a release date or even a Beta test in 2006? YIKES!!

Will we see Tabula Rasa at E3 2005? I hope so at least that will mean it's still on NCsoft's radar....
